There comes a time in every semester where monotony seems to be a recurring thought amongst most college students. A time where schedules have long been set, midterms loom, and many students begin counting down the days until the next break from classes. It has only been a mere month into the semester, but students everywhere are looking for ways to blow off some steam. Fortunately for ASU, the Future Promoters of America have just the thing they need.
This Thursday, the FPA will be presenting GLOWfest, a music event headlined by electro house producer Avicii and popular hip hop duo Chiddy Bang.
GLOWfest is a unique music festival that has been making its way to cities with a heavy college-aged demographic. Many student groups across the nation have presented plans to the promoters of the tour and have worked with them to bring the event to their respective campuses.
When FPA’s president, Christopher Gallego, heard about the different GLOWfest events being held in places like Indiana and Boulder, he petitioned to bring the experience to ASU. The group polled ASU students on Facebook asking what artists they would like to see perform, with Avicii coming out on top.
Avicii is the stage name of Swedish electro house producer Tim Bergling, who has been rapidly gaining popularity in the U.S. Playing alongside Avicii is Chiddy Bang, most famous for their song “Opposite of Adults,” where the duo took samples from MGMT’s song “Kids” to create a whole new track.
The lineup is the perfect combination of hip hop and house music, with both artists promising what will be an unforgettable show. However, if you’re still not convinced, GLOWfest will also include performances from rising artists Cazzette, Silver Medallion and Warm Brew.
One of the main goals of the tour is to work with universities and student organizations to bring great artists at an affordable price.
“We’ve been gaining a lot of attention nationally. We’ve far exceeded our expectations … it’s really cool to see an event happen that people demanded, and ASU is such a strong market for the best acts in the world to come to,” said Deuce Thevenow, co-founder of the event.
Tickets cost $35 if purchased online before the show and $40 at the door. While it’s not the cheapest show in the world, part of what makes GLOWfest unique is it gives student organizations the chance to donate money to charity. Each student organization that registers with the event is given a unique URL to post online. For every ticket purchased from that page, two dollars will be donated to the charity of the group’s choice.
The show will take place Sept. 22 at Mesa Amphitheatre. Doors open and 4:30 p.m. and the show starts at 5 p.m.
